A short note to a friend incapable of seeing her true face…
Where is your face? Not the physical bit of stuff facing out from your head, but the face you’ve described…
In your words, that face is not merely what you see in the mirror. It is the keeper of all the stories; the tales of ugliness, failure, whorish behavior. But where is this face? I ask because I cannot see the face you point to with your words.
This face of despair and loneliness…where is it?
I see eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and they are all pointed in the right direction, and all with the proper orientation. I see the beauty in your smile. The way you turn your head when listening for something off in the distance. The little wrinkles that pile up at the top of your nose when you laugh. And your eyes…the angels marvel at the little turn your eyes make when you’re up to something clever. I clearly see all of this…
But where is the face you speak of?
It must be a deficiency in my functioning, because the sight of the creature you describe so confidently through your stories, I have never once seen.
When I look at you, I see none of what you’ve described. I see the flower, blooming for all, never begging, never lacking, always giving…
Why do you not see this?

How can a flower see ittself?
Are you asking that inwardly, or outwardly, Anonymous?
Conversely Takuin, why do you not see the face she is describing – she sees it. I mean this in all seriousness.
In order for me to see that face, I must accept or believe her story of the person inferior to others. I must build that image to agree she is dirty, impure, and lacking humanity….
I’ve no doubt she believes in that person. It is, after all, her story.
Perhaps it is the absence of faith within Takuin? Maybe that is the reason why I can only see her as she is, and not her story of who she might be…
I hope she can start to see the face you see so that she can be transformed. Sadly, some individuals have their identities so entwined with the stories they tell themselves that the thought of seeing a different reality about themselves can be very unsettling. They feel like “they” will cease to exist. Little do they realize that “they” haven’t existed anyways and that their true self is so much more than they have ever imagined.
Thank you, Tina…very well said.
And I should mention, when I wrote above ‘incapable of seeing her true face’, that is actually a quote in her words. I didn’t mean to imply that she has some problem, or she should see it in another way.
Takuin doesn’t see it because there is nothing to see, there is no one seeing it, only seeing itself.
There is no you, there is no one experiencing, just experiencing happening.
How to transmit that into words to someone who thinks they exist? It can’t unless she sees it for herself, the master can only point, the one working it out needs only to be honest and inquire and see whether its true.
Thank you, zenkitties.
I mentioned something similar to what you’ve said here, in the post Reality or the Human Mind.
Thanks again for your comment.
