How Do You Eat?

Takuin does not eat meat. (Although, this in itself means nothing.) Do you find that the food you eat affects the way you function? What happens if you eat a heavy meal before you go into these questions we pose from time to time? How does food affect the way your life unfolds?

If you are not sure, conduct an experiment; eat different kinds of foods and really be attentive to what may occur.

Please leave any interesting findings you may discover.

Sure, I do believe that food affects me directly. I can’t say that it’s only the food, as I’ve changed a lot of habits in the last year, but I do feel clearer in the head and more energetic if I eat “better”. I’ve now also cut out all meat except fish and am interested to what happens (if anything).

Just out of interest: What do you mean with “this in itself means nothing”?

Since I have become a vegetarian I have become VERY aware of how foods affect me and have been better able to understand my body’s signals of needing one type of food versus another. For instance, I can tell when I need more leafy greens or protein or fruit or carbs whereas before my hunger would just be generalized and I’d find the first thing I could to fill the hole in my stomach. Now I feel like I understand my body’s needs and am much better at anticipating them and eating so I will feel healthy much more of the time.

Nick,

What I meant was, removing meat or anything else from one’s diet is not a prerequisite for liberation (if that is the right word). Just because one is a vegetarian, or whatever they may be, does not mean anything, in the sense we are speaking.

There may be other benefits, of course, but we are not really talking about that. There are real effects that food has on the body, and we are not denying that here. But one should not change their diet just because they seek liberation.

The seeker has problems greater than food selection. :)

That is very true, May. Also, if one “cleans out” their diet, they may find a growing distaste for highly processed foods, and a greater attraction to more natural foods. It may take a bit of time, but it really is true.

The body really does know what it needs, but we tend to cover that with our compulsions and neurotic behavior (or you might say, our need to comfort ourselves through food, for whatever reason).
