Extreme Physical Performance

I found this video via the Blog of Tim Ferris. It is an incredible example of one’s physical potential.

This movement seems to be a combination of Capoeira, Break-Dancing, and Gymnastics. The amount of strength needed to pull-off some of these moves is amazing, but this guy (Junior) seems to move effortlessly.

Peak human performance is something that interests me greatly. Physical movement, guitar playing, acting, or any of one hundred other activities seem masterful in the hands of the right person. And this guy is wonderful.

I am not necessarily into it for the dancing. I just like to see the beauty of physical movement.

Quick Thoughts - Searching (Plus: MySpace and Site Updates)

It has rained for most of the day, here in Toyama. The clouds are low, and the mountain peaks are visible, stabbing toward the sky. It is finally cool here, after a long period of hellish weather.

As I was out this morning, I thought of the transformation in the human mind. It is a constant problem for those that seek to be enlightened.

The searchers life is filled with duality they want to escape from. The very notion of there being a searcher and a search is dualistic. What is being sought, and what is doing the seeking?

The search is created by the mind; by thought. As it sees itself as inadequate, it must have a better, more grand experience. But is there a better experience, or is there just experience?

The idea of there being something better than where we are is destructive. You are here, but you think you should be over there. Why? It isn’t true. If you should be over there, you would be. But you are not. You are here (wherever that is). The endless chattering of the mind, and our belief in that mind, is pain.

There can only be what is, and nothing more.

I wrote this post about eight months ago, when I still lived in Toyama. I may have refined my use of language since then.

This is also the first (and only) post on Takuin’s MySpace. MySpace is certainly a great way to potentially connect with millions of people, although I am not sure how to use it.

If any of you are privy to the finer points of MySpace usage, please drop me a message and enlighten me (pardon the pun), or drop in a comment below.

Also, I recently made a few additions to the Contact page, and I am in the throes of writing a new About page that is more in line with what I am up to these days.

(P.S. Handwritten correspondence is always joyfully received. Wink wink, nudge nudge.)

Quick Thoughts - Thought and the Center

Is it necessary to be dig deep and think up and let our negative thoughts pass? Can we not just let them be, not prod, and find a centre and let them go .Sort of like surrendering to the Universe and letting thoughts come and go rather than , probe ?

I am not saying anything needs to be done, but let’s look at this. You have not done anything already, right? You don’t prod, and you let them be. And this is where you are. If it were fine to be there, you would not ask the question of letting them be. Does that make any sense? If you were fine where you were, you wouldn’t ask anything.

So, the fact is, you ask if you can do the one thing instead of the other. But why? Why is there a need to change? Is it because of pain? Curiosity? (I am not saying you have problems and need to change!) But the humans of this world are ignorant of what goes on within them. And look at the world and see where we are. Is that something you wish to continue contributing to?

You said before that letting thoughts come to the fore is too much thought for your mind. Is that true? Can there be more thought in the mind than what is there? Is that possible? Could it be that you believe things should be different from what they are? You see reality but cannot accept it as it is, so you project your thought onto it to get it to match your beliefs of what should be? That is conflict.

The should be and reality can never meet. That is one of the greatest sources of misery in this world. We want them to come together. We want to try to perform this impossible magic trick of changing reality to what we think it should be, when actually, reality is whatever it is at any given time. It can never be anything else.

Does that make any sense?

You also mentioned finding a center and letting it go. But what is the center? Surely the center is the self. The self is the factory of problems. It can let go of problems, but if the self lets go, is anything really gone? It is very tricky to get one’s head around. If there is a continuation of the self, then there is a continuation of the problem. It is true, the problems might change or go away, but as long as there is a self separate from the rest of the world, it is only a matter of time before it explodes.

One can lead a very happy life from the center. It is probably best to forget about enlightenment and do your best in this world until you are gone. Do what you want to do and just live your life, but do it for the betterment of all.

There are techniques of letting go, and some ways of bypassing the self, as it were. One of them is called The Work ( http://www.thework.com/index.asp ). Another is The Sedona Method ( http://www.sedona.com/ ). It can help clear up some elementary particles that might be “in the way.” The good thing is, the info is available on the websites and you don’t have to buy anything. Just see what it is and go into it the best you can.

Do your best.

Quick Thoughts - Fear

This comes from the comments on Fear, Security, and Earthquakes.

Is fear a mere projection? I don’t know. To a certain extend, yes. But, in some cases it may be natural to be fear, we are born with that, right? To feel that sth wrong is going to happen, so that we can response, be that fight or flight.

The normal response of the body to avoid danger is different from what I am talking about.

If you are walking in the woods and see a snake, what is it that makes you fear it? It is true, there could be some danger there, so we just walk around it. We avoid it and try not to upset the snake. But why should it be feared?

In order to fear the snake, I have to project my thoughts into the future; the snake “could” bite me, so there is fear. But it is only fear of what you are thinking, and not a fear of what is happening. There cannot be fear in the moment, because there is no interference of thought in the moment. No projection or projector.

Don’t fear the snake; just walk around it.

The A to Z of Being : Awareness

This is the first post in the new series, The A to Z of Being.

What is Awareness?

One might think of awareness as having knowledge of something. The train will arrive at 7:00 PM, therefore I am aware of the train schedule. Or, I am aware that both Sean Connery and Roger Moore played James Bond.

Or awareness might be thought of as a recognition of current experience based on the past. If you sit in your kitchen and a dog suddenly walks into the room, you are now aware of the dog. It wasn’t there before, but it is now. Therefore, you are aware of the dog that has just walked into the room.

There are countless other examples, but these seem to fit nicely into what most people use when thinking of awareness.

In everyday conversation, I may use the word in exactly the same way. I find nothing wrong with the definition as it is used in society. But in liberation, the word has a different meaning.

Awareness in Liberation

Awareness is what one might call non-experience. Things happen, climates change, people come and go, but there is no one to experience it. There is no self to attach importance based on preferential thoughts.

In awareness, everything is seen as it is, with absolutely no interference of thought, experience, or memory.

This does not mean that an event will not be remembered, or that one becomes numb or apathetic. On the contrary. When the mind is free of the constraining walls of the self, of belief, of prejudicial experience, then massive energy is available for living. This is not a stimulant type effect, similar to what one might experience from taking high doses of caffeine, but a natural release of energy formerly held in abeyance.

When one is aware, life and death are one constant movement, and the energy of creation (if one can call it that) is ever present. It is akin to life and death because every moment is the beginning and the end simultaneously. There is no point where things start or stop. It is, simply, what it is. (People speak of this and talk about “being in the moment,” or “the present moment.” I have used these words myself. But in truth, there is no present moment. There is no moment of any kind in awareness because there is no time to record anything.)

The inactive, one might say, becomes active, and the organism is finally free to express itself fully.

In awareness there is no notion of what is happening, because there is no conception or impression of something known. There is no one that is “being aware.” With no self to be aware, there is nothing that attaches to any particular experience. Everything comes as it comes, and while there may be memories of all of that, there is no center that attaches to anything.

Simply put:

Awareness is the non-existence of a center that perceives.

It is not an exalted state, or preferred way of living. It is absolutely natural and normal.

Completely New

Events may occur, but there is no entity there to experience them. With no entity, there is no experience. With no experience, there is no point of reference. With no point of reference, there is no reaction to memory. If memory does not interfere, things are seen as they are.

All awareness is non-experience. It is completely new.

Quick Thoughts - Knowing

This comes from the comments on, The Importance of Finding Out for Yourself.

Could it be that understanding through knowledge is not enough? That “knowing it” is not the same as “living it”?

Do we “understand” through what we know? One’s definition of that word might be “to grasp with the intellect,” which would seem to imply, seeing with knowledge. But if one sees through intellect, or knowledge, what is being seen, other than a memory? If that is the case, then knowledge, and understanding, can only take us back to what we already know, and cannot reveal to us what is beyond it.

So, if we are in agreement so far, then what is to be done? There are several questions one could go into at this point; perception, understanding, knowledge, seeing, the “I” movement, and so on. I would take all of them, and more, in turn, and question them; find out what is at the core. I usually look up a word in a reputable dictionary to see the etymology and the various meanings. Then I see how it relates to memory, action, movement, stillness, etc.

But when I relate these things, I do not start from the idea that I am right. Or that I have the right idea that everything should be compared to. It is more of a matter of seeing how one’s mind works. How the knowledge contained therein is used, accessed, and stored; how our prejudices dominate over all things.

It seems daunting, and diligence IS needed, along with a certain amount of sincerity and seriousness. But if it is what you are interested in, go for it.

The time will pass anyway, so what would you like to do with it?

Quick Thoughts - Questions on the Self

This is from the comments on, Anger and the Self.

Is it more important to see how the self operates by extending itself through problems and separation than feel the underlying emotions as they come up? It seems like emotions are always trying to come up to be realized, regardless of what people do about it.

It is easy to be fully aware of the self through conflict. We aren’t really aware of ourselves unless there is something contrary to what we believe. If we are just walking down the street, or out in nature somewhere, we won’t surface…until we introduce conflict. (Notice that I said that we introduce it. Regardless of the external circumstances, if there is conflict, the self is at the root of it.)

I know losing yourself happened in one dramatic instant, but did you feel that connection before even occasionally? Did you realize it was there?

I think I suspected that something was there, but it is hard to say. I did what so many other people do, which is follow others in order to gain something. Doing routines, following systems for attainment, and generally wasting time; trying to find something outside that is already inside.

If I can give any bit of advice it would be: Listen to everyone, but follow no one.

I have a friend who experiences that connection sometimes as well, she calls it pealing away layers, Can some people have just too many layers and need to work on that before all else?

The world of the self, is a world of fragmentation (or layers). If we go from fragment to fragment, we will be at it forever. We can find some temporary relief there, because when we see a fragment for what it is, it is gone for good. But it never ends, as the human mind is fragmented into eternity.

The end is seeing all of fragmentation; the whole thing. It might be hard to understand, but you see fragmentation, NOT the fragments. You see the whole process, as it moves the mind, and not the individual pieces. That might be of some help.

Beautiful Bodies in Motion

Two weeks ago Akiko and I went to see Zero’s Company dance performance in Tokyo. This particular performance was called BASIC. (The site is Japanese, but you can see some small pics of the same performance here.)

We were both blown away. It was an amazing example of the physical expression of the human body.

The company consisted of probably 80% women and 20% men (with a total of around 20 dancers). The explored themes were mostly comedic, but there was one in particular that could be interpreted as a wonderful example of the movement of thought.

There were 4 women dressed in black as Raggedy-Ann dolls. They were sitting on wheeled office chairs that had the back rests removed. On the center of the stage was a woman wearing a red dress. She would dance about, and the dolls in the chairs would move in reaction to what she did. They slid across the stage, clumsily trying to keep up with the dancer, but the only thing they managed to do was to match or mimic themselves.

The dancer was bright, vibrant, and moving with complete freedom. The dolls were in washed out colors, confined to their chairs, completely restricted in their movement.

To me, the dancer in red was whole and complete; an example of a liberated human being. The dolls in the chairs were the experiences, the memories, the thoughts that try to corner the whole being, splitting it into infinity. But the images could never keep up with a whole human being; they could only recreate a rough approximation that lacks the finesse and movement of freedom. It was astoundingly beautiful.

One of the striking elements of the dancers was their ability to create an emotional response with only their movements. And even thought there weren’t any words throughout most of the performance, they were great storytellers.

It was all so beautifully new.

Quick Thoughts - Meeting Others

It is nice for others to show interest in me, but I hope I can dis-suede them from writing down what I say in order to follow it later. It might be of use to write down various questions and go into them, thoroughly seeing whatever might happen to be within.

But if someone really likes me, or for whatever reason, completely identifies with me, there is a danger there. Are they really listening and posing questions to themselves, or do they just take what I say as the truth, accept it and not question it at all?

I love meeting new people, and there is a lovely energy that flows when meeting face to face; something that cannot be experienced through e-mail or blogs. Having said that, I hope no one listens to me and believes I am right and something else is wrong. If someone wants to talk about this stuff, I am happy to do so. If someone wants to talk about Jimi Hendrix, I am happy to do so.

It is interesting to meet people face to face for the first time (related to Takuin.com). They only know me from what they have read, and when I show up, meeting them physically, invariably I am not what they expect me to be.

Life is full of surprises.
