I'm on day 15 of a water fast and I've spent the last week watching Youtube videos of people making chili! I go out at night to walk past kebab shops; I'm craving the smell and taste but my body isn't hungry at all.

Davidya,

We wouldn't touch most of the foods we eat if we were actually completely present while chewing. Perhaps half of the reason we mindlessly eat at breakneck speeds is because it gives us no time to think of the disgusting things we put in our mouths. ;)

Except for cheesecake. I can see no foul there.

travispuk,

Thanks for all of your input.

That reaction may very well be the hand-me-down of all the countless generations before us. I am not really sure others would have the same, or even similar reactions, but it was very interesting to me.

So far it has continued, but it is not as pronounced as it was earlier in week two.

I have a real craving for tsukemono and eggplant at the moment.

Travispuk
Using the mind or emotions to decide what to eat gets us into 'comfort' foods so yes, learning to pay attention to the body and what it needs is good. The body has great intelligence if we don't throw it off with junk food.

If you study the older health traditions, you'll find they do tend to recommend routine meals rather than eating when hungry. The body is more comfortable if it knows when to "expect" food. In Ayurveda, they recommend the main meal at lunch when the digestive fires are greatest, with a lighter meal at dinner thats not too close to bedtime. They also suggest breakfast.

So its less the 3 meals thats at issue but sometimes something like a fast can be useful to reset the system.

Another very good tool is being mindful or present while you eat. Then you are more likely to notice the value in the food, the effect, and when you have enough. I have the habit of eating while I work which does not support this (laughs)

@Davidya, Totally agree on the hormones and antibiotics side for the meat. I am almost exclusively Organic for that reason.

For me I am trying to break the three meals a day concept and working towards reseting my mind into thinking 'eat when you are hungry' instead.

Travispuk - I have read a few things that indicate our physiology tells us we're omnivores - that is, we are equipped to eat a range of foods including meat. But historically, that would have been occasional, not 3 meals a day. And it would not have been meat laden with hormones and antibiotics, etc.

Takuin - yes, I noticed the 4th must have been your worst day (laughs). They actually look to be getting more fluid. But perhaps that is practice.

Takuin,

There is some evidence (whether true or not??) that eating meat is possibly more 'natural' than eating fruits and vegetables, in so far that as cavemen it was unlikely that our ancestors regularly ate fruits and vegetables, but more likely had a fairly staple diet of meat. I am sure that there was fruit and vegies, but mostly meat. Therefore it is possible that your salivation for meat products could be more instinctive than anything else.

I am enjoying the posts on your Fasting experiment as I recently started my own food experiment, but for different reasons. However your's has provided me with some help and inspiration.

It is funny...

If you look at the photo in the post, I am using that calendar on the wall to count down the fasting days. But it seems I started having some trouble around the 4th. I couldn't muster the focus to make a proper check-mark.
